Plan of the Hand

This courses are based on techniques described in Kantar’s book, “Take all Your Chances at Bridge” and William S. Root’s book, “How to Play a Bridge Hand” plus hands drawn from other sources

Topics covered include:

  • Make a plan of play
  • Evaluate the location of known points—did an opponent bid a suit or  double? What does the bid or double show in HCPs or shape?
  • Analyze the opening lead to determine shape and the location of potentially key cards
  • Count winners and losers, as appropriate. How can you eliminate losers by trumping in the suit with the short trumps or trumping in either suit if 4-4 or 5-5 in trumps?
  • Can you benefit from a Dummy Reversal by setting up a long suit in dummy (do you have adequate transportation between hands?)
  • When should you finesse?
  • With multiple finesses available, which should you try first, if at all?
  • Can you end-play an opponent into either a slough and ruff or a lead that provides a free finesse?
  • How can you benefit by trying other options before making a finesse, thereby increasing your chance of success?
  • Playing card combinations

Defensive Techniques

Using Root’s book, “How do Defend a Bridge Hand” plus other appropriate sources, topics covered include:

  • Address selecting a suit to lead
  • Making standard leads from various card combinations
  • Leading against NT contracts
  • Leading against suit contracts
  • First Discards
       - Standard
       - Lavinthal
       - Odd-Even
       - Combining Lavinthal principles with Odd-Even discards
       - Signaling side suit interest and/or shape when playing to the trump suit
       - Suit interest or Count
       - How to cooperate with partner when neither can follow suit
       - Other defensive techniques

Coffee and snacks are included

If you plan to take the course please email Bill Butler (billbutlerbridge@gmail.com).
